motorcycle Permit Help? (California)?
Hi, I have a motorcycle permit in california and one of the restrictions is to not drive on the freeways. But does that include highways as well? I know that freeways don’t have intersections on them, but highways do. I need to make a trip to Lake Tahoe from Wheatland, Ca and I mapquested a route there checking the *avoid highways* box, but it says I have to go on US-50 E. http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Wheatland&1s=CA&1a=3466+Hokan+Ln&1z=95692-9209&1y=US&1l=39.05616&1g=-121.32904&1v=ADDRESS&2c=South+Lake+Tahoe&2s=CA&2a=3730+Lake+Tahoe+Blvd&2z=96150-8904&2y=US&2l=38.94986&2g=-119.95454&2v=ADDRESS&aoh=1 So am I allowed to take this route?
Check the LAW: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=veh&group=00001-01000&file=100-680 — Definitions:
332. “Freeway” is a highway in respect to which the owners of abutting lands have no right or easement of access to or from their abutting lands or in respect to which such owners have only limited or restricted right or easement of access.
——
A freeway is a “Limited-access highway”. There is no difference to city or rural — if there are limited access only by on/off ramps they are freeways. Mapquest or maps.google use “avoid highways” to mean “avoid limited-access highway.” Entrance to the freeway is a green rectangle “Freeway Entrance” sign that says you may not ride with your motorcycle permit. You can see these signs on street view in Google.
Your trip on Mapquest has you on the El Dorado Freeway. Google Maps will give you the streets that will be legal.
IF you care. The cops can not see if you are legal or not until they get pulled over. Since 1964 I have never have been pulled over by a cop.
